Joining the staff of Gastroenterology Consultants in 2011, Dr. Ashok Attaluri feels a strong bond to his patients. “The practice of medicine offers an opportunity to interact and connect with people at a very basic level,” he says. “I feel privileged to have the opportunity to recommend therapies that will prolong or improve quality of life.”

Patients with bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, he notes, generally have a poor quality of life. “Many factors lead to bowel problems, and that requires a customized approach to diagnosis and treatment,” he says. “Recent advances in diagnostic techniques and treatment options allow for better patient outcomes. I believe in a multidisciplinary approach that includes understanding the pathophysiology of symptoms, and utilizing targeted therapy as well as psychologists, dieticians and physical therapists as needed.”

Born in Vijayawada, India, Dr. Attaluri is a graduate of Siddhartha Medical College in India.  He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill., and a fellowship in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He has also completed specialized fellowships in Neurogastroenterology and Motility and Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Iowa City.  He has authored more than 60 articles in medical journals. He is married to Meena Veluri, M.D.
