FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT EGD

Can I have just a few sips of water after my cutoff time?
No, you may have nothing by mouth four hours prior to your arrival. When liquids                 
are in the stomach, inserting the scope down the esophagus can cause aspiration of the fluid into the lungs, a serious condition.

How long will my procedure take?
The EGD will take approximately 10-20 minutes, but you will be here in the surgicenter for about 2-2 ½ hours total. The admission and discharge process will add time to your stay.

What type of clothing should I wear?
We recommend that you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing to your procedure. You are discouraged from bringing valuables with you.

When will I know my test results?
Your doctor will tell you the results of your EGD after the procedure. Biopsy results will take several days.
